Yoga for absolute beginners 0

Posted on July 30, 2010 by Carol

I am constantly hearing people say how they want to try yoga, but they are too intimidated to walk into a class for fear of looking or feeling stupid.  I totally get that.  It is intimidating for someone who can barely touch their toes to be seated next to a human gumbi who can effortlessly twist themselves into a pretzel.  If this newcomer only realized that the gumbi next to them was in their exact same state just a few months prior, maybe it would help them to overcome their angst and feelings of inadequacy, but more often then not, it just sends them bolting for the door. These are incredibly creamy and decadent!  We made these at our teen cooking class last week and not only were they were a big hit with everyone, but they were very easy to make. Read the rest of this entry →

What to do with excess zucchini 1

Posted on July 22, 2010 by Carol

I’m certainly not complaining about a bountiful garden.  There will come a time in the not too distant future when the ground is cold and barren and I am missing my forays into the vegetable garden to see what is ready to be picked.  This year, partly due to poor planning on my part and partly due to the high temperatures we have experienced here in the Northeast, I have an excessive amount of zucchini…more than my family could possibly eat.  I’ve grilled it, Read the rest of this entry →

Teen Cooking Class 0

Posted on July 20, 2010 by Carol

It was so gratifying to me to see a bunch of teenagers—especially teenage BOYS—huddled around the kitchen island, working together as a team, busily preparing a nutritious meal.  We tend to pass culinary skills down to our daughters more readily than we do our sons, so I was happy to see some boys in attendance.  I know the last thing I want is for my sons to rely on Raman noodles and microwave dinners for Read the rest of this entry →

Blueberry Pineapple Juice 1

Posted on July 19, 2010 by Carol

It’s that time of year again….the weather is beautiful, the kids are home from school, the work is piling up, the to-do list is growing exponentially, and the social calendar is overflowing.  The lazy, fun-filled days of summer tend to be accompanied by a variety of foods I typically avoid and evenings getting to bed much later than I’d like.  It’s a fun time of year for sure, but I have been starting to feel the effects of all the hoopla both physically and emotionally, so I decided this week to take a break and do a bit of cleansing…a week of only raw foods and live juices plus my daily yoga and meditation with the goal of cleansing and re-vitalizing both my mind and body.

I thought I would share this juice recipe with my readers to entice you to join me!  This recipe is from the book The Seven Day Total Cleanse by Mary McGuire-Wien.  I highly recommend this book;  it’s chock full of great blends of tasty juices.  Not only does it taste great, but it is Read the rest of this entry →

A look at our first cooking class for kids 1

Posted on July 12, 2010 by Carol

Anyone who has children knows how much they love to help out in the kitchen.  Unfortunately, given how busy peoples lives have become, time spent around the kitchen island making a leisurely meal together, talking, laughing and catching up on one another’s day is quickly becoming a ritual of the past.  Juggling work responsibilities and shuffling our kids back and forth from one activity to the next, leaves very little time left over to reconnect on a very basic level.

This trend has to change.  We need to move away from all the processed convenience foods too many of us have begun to rely upon and start to place a priority on making and eating meals together as a family.  Studies have shown that children who eat Read the rest of this entry →

Yoga Mat Review: Prana Revolution Mat 1

Posted on July 11, 2010 by Carol

The time had finally come to relinquish my trusty ole twenty dollar yoga mat to the garbage pile.  It was literally falling to pieces underneath my feet.  So I went online to purchase a replacement and was bombarded with different choices in prices ranging from $20 to $90.  What to buy?  And what is the difference between a $20 mat and a $90 mat? Staying True to Yourself 0

Posted on July 06, 2010 by Carol

Life is a journey. Each one of us is here on this earth for a distinct purpose.  Some people know what that purpose is very early on in life, while for others it takes many, many years to discover.  What those of us who are on this latter course  have to keep in mind is that the journey itself is the interesting Read the rest of this entry →

What’s in a hot dog? 2

Posted on July 02, 2010 by Carol

I never re-post old articles, but in honor of the holiday weekend ahead of us which will be chock full of backyard barbeques, I couldn’t help but send out this reminder of just why you might want to avoid consuming America’s standard bbq fare this weekend, the good ole hot dog.

Original post:  July 4, 2009:

With all of the 4th of July celebrations in full swing this weekend, I am being confronted with an array of hot dogs, the unmistakable scent of which are wafting through the air at every backyard barbeque I attend.  There was a time when I ate hot dogs with reckless abandon, smothered in mustard and sauerkraut, coupled with a large coke and greasy French fries, oblivious to what I was putting into my body.  I thought they tasted heavenly (especially after a night out of drinking). I never really gave a second thought as to what actually went into one of these creations. Read the rest of this entry →

Recipe: Raw Corn Salad 2

Posted on July 01, 2010 by Carol

Once you have tasted how sweet corn is in its raw, natural state, you will wonder why anyone bothers to cook it.  The kernels have such a sweet taste; just cut them off the cob with a sharp knife and toss them over your favorite green salad to add a wonderful sweetness to your greens or try this flavorful mixture of corn and cherry tomatoes… Read the rest of this entry →
