Women have been slaves to our hormones for generations.  When they get out of balance, we can suffer from a myriad of unpleasant symptoms including PMS, migraines, skin spots, irregular periods, depression, loss of energy, diarrhea, hot flashes, night sweats, cravings for sweets, loss of interest in sex, dry hair and skin, and forgetfulness. It’s amazing what havoc hormones can wreck on our lives when they are not kept in check.

Certain foods are conducive to keeping your hormones in balance.  If you are suffering from a variety of symptoms and are of a certain age, chances are you could benefit from making some changes to your diet to help get yourself back into balance. Read the rest of this entry →

Maca is a Peruvian root grown in the Andes that has long been known for its ability to increase energy, stamina, and sexual function and is becoming more and more recognized for its ability to regulate and support endrocrine health. What woman doesn’t need a little assistance regulating her hormones…PMS, menopause anyone? For my male readers, you may want to pay particular attention as well. Maca is known to increase fertility as well as libido. It’s natures Viagra.

How does it do all of this? The maca root “doesn’t contain any hormones itself, but it provides a unique blend of nutrients that directly fuel the endocrine system and help the glands to produce vital hormones in precise dosages predetermined by one’s own body”. This is according to the Macaroot website. David Wolfe, a raw foods pioneer, is also a huge proponent of using this Read the rest of this entry →

Family Dining Al Fresco

A steak and potatoes guy married to a vegetarian with one child allergic to wheat and dairy and another who will eat nothing but white rice.  How do you get dinner out on the table without feeling like a short order cook? Our family has had its share of dietary struggles over the years.  I never realized how emotionally charged food issues could be until I tried to change the way my family Read the rest of this entry →

The boob job dilemma 30

Breast problem

What is with our society’s obsession with large breasts?  When did this start and how has it gotten so out of control?  Out of my entire circle of friends, colleagues and acquaintances, I only know two other women who are flat-chested like myself.  Apparently, we are a dying breed.  Now I have nothing against plastic surgery…I’m as vain as the next person and will probably end up going under the knife at some point in my life when my looks really start to plummet, but the boob thing has really started to bother me.

I am so tired of seeing women everywhere I go with abnormally large, beach ball round breasts bursting out of their barely-there tank tops.  Men and women alike can’t help but stare at these wonders given the way they are packaged and presented.  My favorite is when an 80 year old woman who has obviously become quite good friends with her plastic surgeon struts on by with perkier Read the rest of this entry →

The food mood connection 25

Enjoying the sun

There are days when I wake up and feel inexplicably great.  I feel happy, calm, and energetic, as if I could go and out and take a 10 mile run (I don’t, but it’s nice to think I can).  And then there are other days when I wake up feeling sluggish and tired, like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders, feeling frustrated, anxious or bored.  Given a choice, clearly I would prefer Read the rest of this entry →

Easy raw berry pie 3

Posted on July 09, 2009 by Carol

rawpieThis pie is almost too pretty to eat. My kids couldn’t wait to devour it.  The most time consuming part was slicing the strawberries, but it still didn’t take more than 15 minutes to make.  I found a recipe on www.StevePavlini.com for a blueberry pie and made that last week.  It was great, but I wanted to experiment with some other fruits and flavors, so this is what I came up with.  It’s simple, very tasty, and fancy enough to bring to a dinner party. (The recipe made too much filling for the Read the rest of this entry →

Getting back on track 3

Young beautiful women with apples looking at cookies

It happens to the best of us occasionally. Despite good intentions, we get off track and fall prey to our old, bad habits…not exercising enough, eating junk food, drinking too much alcohol…whatever your particular vice is. Fear not, you can get yourself back on track in no time. It just requires identifying the problem, setting an intention to correct it, and doing it. Simple enough, right?

For me, the start of the kids summer vacation has thrown me into a tailspin. The lack of routine has disrupted my own habits…and not in a good way. I find myself eating out more, which we all know can spell disaster. In my case that means more opportunities to

What’s in a hot dog? 3

Posted on July 04, 2009 by Carol

With all of the 4th of July celebrations in full swing this weekend, I am being confronted with an array of hot dogs, the unmistakable scent of which are wafting through the air at every backyard barbeque I attend. There was a time when I ate hot dogs with reckless abandon, smothered in mustard and sauerkraut, coupled with a large coke and greasy French fries, oblivious to what I was putting into my body. I thought they tasted heavenly (especially after a night out of drinking). I never really gave a second thought as to what actually went into one of these creations.

Not to be a spoil-sport here…you may actually prefer to skip this article and read it after the weekends festivities…but since this topic is so fresh on my mind and my kids have asked me to explain Read the rest of this entry →
