Blueberry Pineapple Juice 1

It’s that time of year again….the weather is beautiful, the kids are home from school, the work is piling up, the to-do list is growing exponentially, and the social calendar is overflowing.  The lazy, fun-filled days of summer tend to be accompanied by a variety of foods I typically avoid and evenings getting to bed much later than I’d like.  It’s a fun time of year for sure, but I have been starting to feel the effects of all the hoopla both physically and emotionally, so I decided this week to take a break and do a bit of cleansing…a week of only raw foods and live juices plus my daily yoga and meditation with the goal of cleansing and re-vitalizing both my mind and body.

I thought I would share this juice recipe with my readers to entice you to join me!  This recipe is from the book The Seven Day Total Cleanse by Mary McGuire-Wien.  I highly recommend this book;  it’s chock full of great blends of tasty juices.  Not only does it taste great, but it is Read the rest of this entry →

Raw juicing book review 16

raw juiceSo I’m back. You didn’t really think I could stay away from this blog for too long did you? I have truly missed writing the articles, so the posts may be infrequent and sporadic, but they will be here when inspiration strikes.

I’ve had quite a few weeks since the holiday madness relinquished it’s control over my life to unwind, relax, and enjoy some much needed downtime. (Although coaching our kids’ basketball teams and racing from one after school activity to another isn’t exactly downtime, it’s less busy than it had been for a few months.)

One of the things I have been enjoying the most during these cold winter months is reacquainting myself with my juicer. I’ve been giving it quite a workout of late. Juicing isn’t something I usually associate with the cold winter months; I’m more of a Read the rest of this entry →

Weekly health challenge: boost your energy level by juicing 22

Posted on May 18, 2009 by Carol

Each week I will challenge you to do something healthy for the entire week and take note of the effect it has on you.

Whenever I feel sluggish or want to strengthen my immune system, I turn to juicing. My monster size Breville juicer has a prominent place on our kitchen counter, right next to the sink, so it is always accessible and easy to clean…two key components.

Think of raw organic juices as nutritional supplements and preventive medicine. Drinking freshly made juices provides us with a concentrated supply of vital nutrients and live enzymes that we can’t get from eating alone; it’s just not likely that we could eat that much of a given vegetable at one sitting. For example, a 9 ounce glass of carrot juice has the same amount of nutrients as 18 ounces of whole carrots. That’s a lot of carrots. Read the rest of this entry →

The wonders of wheatgrass 24

Posted on April 01, 2009 by Carol

Wheatgrass is one of those things I thought only extreme health food nuts drank. The few times I have had it in the past I nearly gagged at the taste. I would bravely toss it back like I was doing a shot of whisky, quickly “chasing” it with a wedge of lemon or orange and then shuddering at the aftertaste. Could good health really be worth subjecting myself to such treatment?

Surprisingly, I have rediscovered wheatgrass and have found that I actually do not mind the taste anymore. Granted, I am not salivating over the thought of my first shot every morning…it doesn’t rank up there with the taste of freshly squeezed orange juice, but it is no longer quite so revolting. I suppose the last few months of being high raw (eating about 80% raw foods) has something to do with this phenomenon. My body must be adjusting to the increase in green vegetables so it now views wheatgrass as a welcome friend rather than foe. I’m sure there is a much more scientific explanation, but I’m not really that interested in finding out.
