Sitting in the doctor’s office waiting room the other day with my son, I started reading an interview with Elizabeth Gilbert of the Eat, Pray, Love phenomenon. One line in the article jumped out at me as if she were speaking directly to me. “Just because you can do anything does not mean you can do everything”. I stopped and re-read that line about five times to allow it to sink into my thick skull. “Just because you CAN DO ANYTHING does NOT mean you can do EVERYTHING”. Did you get it that time? It took me a few times before I actually got what she was saying.
The pace most of us live our lives is way too intense. As Elizabeth points out, it’s not human and if we continue to live this way, it will make us sick. If we just pay attention, our bodies give us signals when things are out of balance or in need of extra attention. If we continually ignore these signals, symptoms worsen and we become more and more out of balance, resulting in injury or illness.
