I never re-post old articles, but in honor of the holiday weekend ahead of us which will be chock full of backyard barbeques, I couldn’t help but send out this reminder of just why you might want to avoid consuming America’s standard bbq fare this weekend, the good ole hot dog.

With all of the 4th of July celebrations in full swing this weekend, I am being confronted with an array of hot dogs, the unmistakable scent of which are wafting through the air at every backyard barbeque I attend. There was a time when I ate hot dogs with reckless abandon, smothered in mustard and sauerkraut, coupled with a large coke and greasy French fries, oblivious to what I was putting into my body. This is a very thought provoking book, along the lines of Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore’s Dilemna. The author, Melanie Joy, explores the psychology of carnism, the belief system that enables us to eat some animals and not others. So I’m back.You didn’t really think I could stay away from this blog for too long did you?I have truly missed writing the articles, so the posts may be infrequent and sporadic, but they will be here when inspiration strikes.
I’ve had quite a few weeks since the holiday madness relinquished it’s control over my life to unwind, relax, and enjoy some much needed downtime.(Although coaching our kids’ basketball teams and racing from one after school activity to another isn’t exactly downtime, it’s less busy than it had been for a few months.)
