Daily Habits 1

Posted on August 17, 2010 by Carol

Sitting in the doctor’s office waiting room the other day with my son, I started reading an interview with Elizabeth Gilbert of the Eat, Pray, Love phenomenon.  One line in the article jumped out at me as if she were speaking directly to me.  “Just because you can do anything does not mean you can do everything”.  I stopped and re-read that line about five times to allow it to sink into my thick skull.  “Just because you CAN DO ANYTHING does NOT mean you can do EVERYTHING”.  Did you get it that time?  It took me a few times before I actually got what she was saying.

The pace most of us live our lives is way too intense.  As Elizabeth points out, it’s not human and if we continue to live this way, it will make us sick.  This isn’t only directed towards all the overachievers out there; the average working parent takes on way more than they can chew.  Between the Read the rest of this entry →

Teen Cooking Class 0

Posted on July 20, 2010 by Carol

It was so gratifying to me to see a bunch of teenagers—especially teenage BOYS—huddled around the kitchen island, working together as a team, busily preparing a nutritious meal.  We tend to pass culinary skills down to our daughters more readily than we do our sons, so I was happy to see some boys in attendance.  I know the last thing I want is for my sons to rely on Raman noodles and microwave dinners for Read the rest of this entry →

A look at our first cooking class for kids 1

Posted on July 12, 2010 by Carol

Anyone who has children knows how much they love to help out in the kitchen.  Unfortunately, given how busy peoples lives have become, time spent around the kitchen island making a leisurely meal together, talking, laughing and catching up on one another’s day is quickly becoming a ritual of the past.  Juggling work responsibilities and shuffling our kids back and forth from one activity to the next, leaves very little time left over to reconnect on a very basic level.

This trend has to change.  We need to move away from all the processed convenience foods too many of us have begun to rely upon and start to place a priority on making and eating meals together as a family.  Studies have shown that children who eat Read the rest of this entry →

Staying True to Yourself 0

Posted on July 06, 2010 by Carol

Life is a journey. Each one of us is here on this earth for a distinct purpose.  Some people know what that purpose is very early on in life, while for others it takes many, many years to discover.  What those of us who are on this latter course  have to keep in mind is that the journey itself is the interesting Read the rest of this entry →

Getting SLOW 4

Posted on June 14, 2010 by Carol

If we just pay attention, our bodies give us signals when things are out of balance or in need of extra attention.  If we continually ignore these signals, symptoms worsen and we become more and more out of balance, resulting in injury or illness. If only I would begin to take my own advice, I wouldn’t be sitting here at the computer with one arm hanging uselessly by my side.  If I attempt to lift it or move it in a certain Read the rest of this entry →

One week to go until our first raw vegan dinner party 1

Posted on June 10, 2010 by Carol

It’s down to the wire now.  Our very first, entirely raw vegan dinner party is one week away.  Although it was originally planned for 25 people, my client went a little invitation happy and it grew to 45 adults and 47 children.  Yikes.  After I got over my initial shock at the sheer size of this project, I couldn’t help but laugh.  Nothing like jumping into catering head first with virtually no experience.  I’ve always loved a challenge though.  Fortunately, I was able to put together a stellar catering staff who make up for my lack of expertise, so things are looking good.  The menu is planned, the workflow is plotted out, the staff is ready to go, and my dehydrators are running around the clock testing and re-testing recipes.  My family members are cooperative taste testers and my dogs just love when I make mistakes. What could possibly go wrong?

Stay tuned…

Allergies: a kid’s point of view 7

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Carol

Allergies amongst children seem to be everywhere these days.  I haven’t researched the statistics yet, but solely based upon my observation as a parent, the problem seems to just be getting worse.  Many schools are now peanut free to accommodate children within the school who have severe allergic reactions to peanuts.  I don’t recall ever hearing anything of the sort when I was growing up.  It was a rare occasion when a Read the rest of this entry →

Tips for time management 1

Posted on May 10, 2010 by Carol

I’m no stranger to juggling responsibilities.  Between having three school age children, a husband, a home, two businesses, and a variety of interests, managing to keep balance in my life presents quite a challenge.  Time management skills are crucial for keeping my head above water.  I’d like to share some tips I’ve picked up along the way that help me to stay focused and productive in my work, but also have enough time to do the things I love.

Keep a to-do list

I am the ultimate list maker.  In the past, I would write a list, cross a few items off said list, then have to re-write the entire list because more items have popped up and, being completely anal, I cannot function when I have to look at such a messy list.  By the end of the day, if I had added up how much time I had spent on Read the rest of this entry →

The role media plays in our kids health 6

Posted on April 29, 2010 by Carol

It’s confusing to be an adolescent trying to stay healthy these days.  Mixed messages are being directed at our kids from all different directions.  They are constantly being told what to do by the authority figures in their lives…parents, teachers, coaches, doctors and the like. At times the messages from this crew of authority figures are in alignment with one another, but more often than not, they aren’t.  Then you throw media into the mix.  Just flip on the television and listen—really listen—to the messages that are being directly marketed to our youth.
